Away from her is the lyrical screenplay adaptation of celebrated author Alice Munro’s short story “The Bear Came Over the Mountain”. Married for 50 years, Grant (Gordon Pinsent) and Fiona’s (Julie Christie) commitment to each other appears unwavering, and their everyday life is full of tenderness and humour. Sometimes there is restrained reference to the past, giving a sense that this marriage may not always have been such a fairy tale. This tendency of Fiona’s to make such references, along with her increasingly evident memory loss, creates a tension that is usually brushed off casually by both of them. As the lapses become more obvious and dramatic, it is no longer possible for either of them to ignore the fact that Fiona is suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

SARAH POLEY. Durante los últimos seis años ha ejercido como guionista y directora de varios proyectos en Canadá. Como actriz ha participado en diversas películas de Atom Egoyan, como Exótica o El dulce porvenir. Además ha actuado en películas como La última noche, de Don McKellar; El perdón, de Michael Winterbottom; El peso del agua, de Kathryn Bigelow; eXistenZ, de David Cronenbeg; No Such Thing de Hal Hartley; The Event, de Tom Fitzgerald; Mi vida sin mí y La vida secreta de las palabras.
She has been writing and directing in Canada for the last six years. In 1999, she directed the short films The Best Day of My Life, and then wrote, directed and produced Don’t Think Twice. In 2001, she wrote, directed and co-produced I Shout Love, The film won a 2003 Genie Award for Best Live Action Short Drama. As an actor, Sarah’s breakthrough role was her portrayal of Nicole in Atom Egoyan’s The Sweet Hereafter. Polley chose to return to Canada and appear in unusual, independent films such as Michael Winterbottom’s The Claim, David Cronenberg’s Existenz, Hal Hartley’s No Such Thing, or Isabel Coixet’s My Life Without Me and The Secret Life of Words.
