In the Madrid metro, Alex, seven, accompanies his pickpocket mother to her favourite haunts. But then she is caught by the police, and the boy is left to continue on his way, alone. A dozen years later, just out of the orphanage, Alex is earning a living in a hair salon. Since his mother disappeared following her arrest, he tries to track her down and finds himself once again in the world of street thieves. Intuitive, cunning, having all the moves down pat, he makes an excellent pickpocket. This is how he meets Sara, a student from a good family, who wants to learn how to purse-snatch simply for the fun of it. The two fall in love, and their relationship goes far deeper than the usual adolescent flirtation. In Ladrones, thanks to the quality of the writing, the plotting is perfectly realised through the direction. The pickpocketing scenes are constructed like choreography, in which the exchanged glances, lightly touching hands, bodies seeking one another resonate with the emotional connection between the two. The filmmaker orchestrates these moments of seduction with evocative music, giving them a languorous rhythm. Juan José Ballesta (discovered in 2003 in Achero Manas’El Bola), and Maria Valverde (the new hope of Spanish cinema seen recently in Antonio Hernandez’ Los Borgia (2006)) play the lead roles, and know just how to move in space. Ladrones is a physical film, in which texture, bodies and objects are rendered palpable through the lighting and photography. But this skilfully wrought aesthetic dimension does not override the more moral impact of the film since this modern Bonnie and Clyde are, above all, the protagonists of a beautiful love story, in which risks are taken, sacrifices are made, and in which the happiness of the other is what counts most.
