El legendario baterista y compositor Billy Cobham ofrece un concierto en Finlandia para un auditorio rebosante de devotos del jazz. Su siguiente actuación será al aire libre, en las calles de Brasil y para los niños que con excepción de su alegría de vivir y un contagioso sentido del ritmo, poco más poseen. Cobham recibe con impagable humor los consejos de uno de ellos sobre cómo tocar el tambor. Y de Brasil, de nuevo a Europa, esta vez a una institución Suiza que trabaja con personas autistas.

For most people music is a marvellous experience and part of their life whether or not they play an instrument themselves. They understand music and rhythm as a fundamental communication tool of mankind. Mika Kaurismaki`s new film SONIC MIRROR is a surprising and emotional dive into the world of rhythm – an extraordinary trip to discover the magic relationship between Life and Rhythm. Drum legend Billy Cobham takes us from the bandstands of the Western world to the primal music of African origin with kids in a Brazilian community and on to the completely secluded world of musical experiences of autists. These different worlds are yet connected in a mystical and secret way. The relation between the collective and the individual consciousness becomes obvious when, in a fantastic final, the symbiosis is achieved. Music is emotion. Music is communication. Music is identity. Music as a true universal language to express hope, love, ambition and joy. SONIC MIRROR is a film full of vibrancy and compassion, authentic and hypnotic from the first to the very last moment.

MIKA KAURISMÄKI nació en Finlandia en 1955. Director, productor, guionista y editor, estudió en la Universidad de Cine y Televisión de Munich. Su primera película, The Liar (1980), para la que contó con la colaboración de su hermano menor, Aki Kaurismäki, como protagonista y coguionista, fue un éxito instantáneo en su país. Juntos fundaron la influyente productora Villealfa Filmproductions. Su reputación como cineasta se consolidó en 1994 cuando rodó el documental Tigrero – A Film That Was Never Made con Sam Fuller y Jim Jarmusch, que recibió el Premio Fipresci en el Festival de Cine de Berlín. Ha sido premiado con numerosos Jussy Awards (que concede la Academia de Cine Finlandés) por sus películas Zombie and the Ghost Train (con la que compitió por la Concha de Oro en San Sebastián 1991), Helsinki Napoli All Night Long (1988), Rosso (1986) o Arvotto Mat (1983). Su documental Sound of Brasil fue incluido en la Sección Desorden y Concierto de la 40 edición del Festival de Cine de Gijón.

Mika Kaurismaki studied film direction in Munich. His first film, «The Liar», was made in Finland in 1980. He made it together with his young brother Aki, who wrote the script. They have had a successful cooperation ever since. In the 1990s, Mika moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he has worked on many co-productions.
