Melody regresa a su hogar en Fairlands para el funeral de su hija June, con la que estaba enemistada. El pueblo casi ha desaparecido bajo las arenas del desierto. También tiene que aceptar el hecho de que tiene un nieto de diez años, River, cuya existencia desconocía. Melody decide llevarse a River, pero él se opone; cuenta con un ambicioso plan de supervivencia basado en la cría de las avestruces que él y su madre solían alimentar. También su padre, Scope, músico y cartero del pueblo, quiere que ella se vaya porque guarda un secreto.

Melody returns home to Fairlands for the funeral of her estranged daughter June. But the town has almost disappeared under the encroaching desert. She also has to confront the fact that she has a 10-year-old grandson, River, whose existence she knew nothing about. Melody decides to take River away with her but he resists. He has worked out an ambitious plan to survive by breeding the ostriches he and his mother used to feed. His father, Scope, an idle musician and the town postman, also wants her to leave because he has a secret to hide.

THREES ANNA. Su obra artística se desarrolla en tres campos: literatura, teatro y cine. Después de graduarse en la Rietveld Academy of Arts de Amsterdam, se incorporó a la compañía de teatro internacional Dogtroep. Directora artística de la misma de 1989 a 1999, ha escrito y dirigido más de cincuenta obras, representadas por todo el mundo. En 1998 empezó a escribir su primer guión cinematográfico, The Bird Can’t Fly, que ocho años más tarde se convertiría en su primer largometraje. Además, ha escrito varias novelas, incluida la que da título a la película.

Her artistic work covers three fields: literature, theatre and cinema. Having graduated at the Rietveld Academy of Arts in Amsterdam, she joined the Dogtroep international theatre company, of which she was art director from 1989 to 1999. She has written and directed over 50 works, performed all over the world. In 1998 she started to write her first screenplay, The Bird Can’t Fly, which became her directorial debut eight years later. She has also written several novels, including the one giving the film its title.
