Auschwitz no era lo que Sven, un joven alemán, tenía en mente cuando se enlistó en el servicio civil. Para él, Auschwitz era un pequeño pueblo polaco, un lenguaje extraño, un campo de concentración, todo lo enmohecido y gris de las clases de historia alemana de la secundaria. Para empeorar las cosas, él tenía que hacerse cargo de un desagradable viejo Stanislaw Krzemiñski, un ex-convicto que nunca dejó el campo y que ahora pasa su tiempo tanto dando clases como testigo contemporáneo o reparando maletas. El mundo de Krzemiñski gira alrededor de maletas que fueron quitadas a los judíos cuando llegaron a los campos de concentración de todo Europa. Además de lidiar con la arrogancia de Krzemiñski de mala manera, Sven también tiene que afrontar con la poca aceptación de varios lugareños.

Auschwitz wasn´t what Sven, a young German, had in mind when he signed up to do his civil service abroad. For him, Auschwitz is a small town in Poland, a strange language, a concentration camp, all the musty grayness of high-school German history classes. To make matters worse, he´s got to care for an unpleasant old man, Stanislaw Krzemiñski, a former inmate who never left the camp and now spends his time either giving contemporary-witness lectures or repairing suitcases. Krzemiñski´s world revolves around the suitcases taken from the Jews as they arrived at the concentration camp from all over Europe. Besides having to endure Krzemiñski´s haughty, gruff manner, Sven also has to put up with the barely concealed contempt of various locals

ROBERT THALHEIM (Berlin, 1974). Después de su graduación de secundaria en Rockville, Indiana (USA) en 1992, terminó el bachillerato en Berlín en 1995. En 1996 hizo el documental Um vier uhr plôtzlich ging die welt unter, para la televisión alemana SFB. Era asistente de dirección en el Berliner Ensemble Theater. De 1998 a 2000 estudió dirección cinematográfica en Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf en Potsdam Babelsberg. Más adelante dirigió los cortometrajes Zeist ist leben, Granica, Three Percent y Ich, y su primer largometraje Netto, ha ganado varios premios.

After a high-school graduation in Rockville, Indiana (USA) in1992, he finished German school with his Abitur in Berlin in 1995. In 1996 he made the documentary Um vier uhr plôtzlich ging die welt unter, for German Television SFB. Afterwards, he was assistant director at the Berliner Ensemble Theater. 1998 to 2000 he studied New German Literature, History and Politics at the Freie Universität Berlin.. Together with Stefan Meyer, he published the book “Asche oder Diamant? Polnische Geschichte in den Filmen Andrzej Wajda”. From 2000 to 2006 Robert Thalheim studied film directing at the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen Konrad Wolf in Potsdam Babelsberg. Furthermore he directed the short films Zeist ist leben, Granica, Three Percent and Ich, and his debut feature film Netto, which had won several prizes.
