Afghan Muscles is a story about a country – and about bodybuilding. The sport has become the most popular in Kabul, and thousands of men dream of muscles and beauty. But it is not just about the looks. A championship brings fame, social recognition, and honour to the name of your father and ancestors.
Hamid Shirzai wants to be a national champion like his brother and uncle. They were part of a legendary team of bodybuilders that won medals at the Asian Championships in the early 90’s. During the winter of 1992, a plane with the champions inside, exploded on a mountain in the Hindu Kush. The mothers and fathers grieved while the brothers and cousins went bodybuilding. Hamid is the only one still in the game.

Afghan Muscles es una historia acerca de un país, y acerca del fisicoculturismo Éste deporte se ha convertido en el más popular en Kabul, miles de hombres sueñan con músculos y belleza. Pero no es sólo acerca de la imagen. Un campeonato conlleva fama, reconocimiento y honor a la familia y ancestros. Hamid Shirzai quiere ser campeón nacional como su hermano y su tío. Ellos formaban parte del equipo legendario de fisicoculturistas que ganó medallas en el Campeonato Asiático en los 90s. Durante el invierno de 1992, un avión que transportaba a los campeones explotó en una montaña en el Hindu Kush. Las madres y padres sufrían mientras los hermanos y primos entrenaban. Hamid es el único aún en el juego.

ANDREAS M. DALSGAARD
Estudiante del European Film College de 2000 a 2001. En sus estudios se ha concentrado en Afganistán, basándose en diversos viajes a ese lugar desde 2003. Ahí descubrió la gran popularidad del fisicoculturismo, y se interesó en el tema. Desde 2001 Andreas M. Dalsgaard ha trabajado en producciones y dirigiendo películas para la televisión Danesa en París, Dinamarca, Afganistán, América y China. En el presente estudia dirección en el departamento de ficción de la Escuela Nacional de Cine de Dinamarca, al tiempo que trabaja en documentales.

He is a student from the European Film College in 2000-2001, and he holds a BA in Anthropology from studies at Aarhus University in Denmark and Université Denis Diderot Paris VII. At both places his focus has been Afghanistan, based on several trips to the country from 2003 onwards. Here he discovered the great popularity of bodybuilding, and became interested in the subject. Since 2001 Andreas M. Dalsgaard has been working with productions within Xanadu Productions and Haslund Film, directing films for Danish TV in Paris, Denmark, Afghanistan, America and China. At present, he is a student of directing at the fiction department of the Danish National Film School, while working on documentaries alongside his studies.
