En 1987, el «Negro», de once años, y el «Gringo», un año menor, trabajaban como otros tantos niños en el Mercado Mayorista de Frutas de Lima. En el cortometraje Encuentro de hombrecitos nos contaron acerca de sus vidas, sus trabajos, sus sueños. Veinte años después Alejandro Legaspi decide ir en búsqueda de los dos personajes para nuevamente filmar un documental. Y los vuelve a encontrar. El país ha cambiado; sus vidas, trabajos y sueños también. Sueños lejanos es una reflexión, a partir de las vivencias de nuestros personajes, sobre el pasado, presente y futuro del Perú.

Twenty years ago, the Peruvian filmmaker Alejandro Legaspi made a short film about two little boys who both worked from dawn till dusk on a fruit market in the capital Lima. Eleven-year-old Negro and ten-year-old Gringo did not know each other, although they did essentially the same work in the same place. Over the years, a lot has changed in Peru. In the nineties, under president Fujimori, human rights were violated and corruption was rife nationwide, and despite attempts to let all citizens benefit from the free market, to this day poverty and unemployment prevail among the Peruvians. The filmmaker wonders how his Gringo and Negro have fared and looks for them. When he finds them, he asks them about their current life, their jobs, family life and dreams for the future. One combs all sorts of markets with his assortment of ointments and positions; the other has almost paid off his three-wheel scooter. Both men are marked by their childhood in poverty and still are quite deprived, but they are optimistic about the future.

ALEJANDRO LEGASPI (Montevideo, Uruguay, 1948). A mediados de la década del setenta se afincó en Lima. Ha desempeñado una intensa labor cinematográfica, como camarógrafo y realizador, en su país natal, Nicaragua y Perú. Con otros cineastas fundó el Grupo Chaski en los años ochenta y codirigió el mediometraje Miss Universo en el Perú y los largometrajes Gregorio y Juliana, cintas que obtuvieron sendos premios internacionales. Así mismo ha realizado varios cortometrajes de ficción y del género documental, como es el caso de Encuentro de hombrecitos, obra premiada con el premio “Kukuli” del Episcopado Peruano. Últimamente ha co-escrito el guión del largometraje La última noticia y dirigido el documental Sueños lejanos, cuyo proyecto fue premiado por el CONACINE. Legaspi también desarrolla labores académicas en el Instituto Charles Chaplin y la Universidad Católica de Lima.

He has worked in cinematography as camarographer, director in Uruguay, Nicaragua and Peru. With other filmmakers founded the Group Chasky and codirected the films Miss Universo en el Perú, Gregorio and Juliana, and got international awards. Also has made several short films and documentaries as Encuentro de hombrecitos, that gave him the «Kukuli» award. Has co written the feature film La última noticia and directed the documentary  Sueños lejanos, with a grant of CONACINE. Legaspi is also a teacher at Instituto Charles Chaplin and la Universidad Católica de Lima.
