Una biografía cinematográfica de Napoleón de 6 horas, relata su historia desde sus años de escuela (dónde una guerra de bolas de nieve es montada como una campaña militar), su lucha con Corsica, por la revolución francesa (donde una tormenta real se cruza con una tormenta política) y por el terror, culminando su triunfante invasión en Italia en 1797 (la película acaba ahí porque pretendía ser una parte de seis, pero el director Abel Gance nunca reunió el dinero para hacer las otras cinco). La legendaria reputación de la película se debe a la sorprendente diversidad de técnicas que Gance usa para contar su historia, culminando con los 20 minutos finales en una secuencia tríptica, que alterna panoramas amplios y complejos montajes de imágenes múltiples proyectados simultáneamente en tres pantallas.

A massive six-hour biopic of Napoleon, tracing his career from his schooldays (where a snowball fight is staged like a military campaign), his flight from Corsica, through the French Revolution (where a real storm is intercut with a political storm) and the Terror, culminating in his triumphant invasion of Italy in 1797 (the film stops there because it was intended to be part one of six, but director Abel Gance never raised the money to make the other five). The film’s legendary reputation is due to the astonishing range of techniques that Gance uses to tell his story, culminating in the final twenty-minute triptych sequence, which alternates widescreen panoramas with complex multiple- image montages projected simultaneously on three screens.

ABEL GANCE (1889- 1981)
Fue un director francés, productor, escritor, actor y editor mejor recordado por su trabajo en el cine mudo. Napoleón (1927) el ejemplo de sus trabajos mas innovadores. Al carrete final de la película se le aplicó en un proceso que Gance llamo Polyvision, usando tres cintas en tres cámaras, colocadas una junto a otra, triplicando el campo visual para mostrar un sorprendente panorama de un campo de batalla. Al final de la película, las pantallas laterales se pintan de azul y rojo creando una imagen de la bandera francesa. Continuó su carrera en 1960 con dramas históricos como Austerlitz. Murió en 1981 de tuberculosis en París, Vivió para ver la triunfante recepción y la versión restaurada de su épica muda Napoleón en 1980, y acompañando la reedición creció su reputación como un cineasta precursor.

Was a French film director, producer, writer, actor and editor best remembered for his work in silent film. Napoléon (1927) is among his most innovative works. The final reel of the film, made in a process Gance called Polyvision, used three film strips filmed by three cameras, and shown side by side, tripling the aspect ratio to show a staggering panorama of a battlefield. At the very end of the film, the outer two film panels were tinted blue and red, creating a widescreen image of a French flag. He resumed his film making career in 1960 with historical dramas such as Austerlitz. He died in 1981 of tuberculosis in Paris. He did, however, live to see the triumphant reception of the restored version of his silent epic Napoléon in 1980, and the accompanying restoration of his reputation as a pioneering filmmaker.
