La historia tragicómica de varias familias del norte argentino, provincia de Santa Fé, dagnificados por las inundaciones que cíclicamente se abaten sobre la región, se concentra ante todo en lo sucedido a la familia Gaitán: Dolorcito, su mujer Óptima, así como sus varios hijos, entre ellos la adolescente Pilar. Combina la ventura inesperada (el vagón en el que duerme la familia es enganchado a una locomotora y arrastrado cientos de kilómetros) con la denuncia social en torno de los pobres ante la ineptitud y la demagogia de los políticos.

When a flood ravages an Argentine coastal village, residents are relocated to a dirt encampment in Santa Fe. Officials on all sides—it’s election time—promise them aid, but still, there they sit. Ridiculous, yes and the film is full of jaunty sarcasm and grating irony. It focuses on one family, the Gaitáns, who try to make sense out of the nonsense spewing forth from reporters and ministers , all wearing the customary dark glasses. The Gaitáns find themselves on an adventure when the boxcar in which they have been living begins to move…. As the Gaitáns are turned away from station after station because, administratively, their boxcar does not exist, we are also in a tragic-comedy of absurd proportions.

FERNANDO BIRRI (Santa Fe, Argentina, 1925)
Cineasta, poeta, pintor, profesor y teórico de notables textos sobre el cine argentino y latinoamericano, es uno de los artistas cinematográficos más originales de América Latina. Cursó estudios en el Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia de Roma, y fundó y dirigió en 1956 el Instituto de Cinematografia de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral. En su filmografía destacan el documental Tire dié (1956-58) y la comedia de tintes neorrealistas Los inundados (1961), considerada un clásico del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano. También es uno de los fundadores de la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños, de Cuba, la cual dirige 1986 a 1990.

Filmmaker, poet, painter, professor and theoretician author of notable texts on Argentine and Latin American cinema is one of Latin America’s most original artists. He studied at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia in Rome, founded and directed in 1956 the Instituto de Cinematografia of the Universidad Nacional del Litoral. Among his films, the documentary Tire dié (1956-58) and the comedy with neorealist strokes Los inundados (1961), considered a classic of the New Latin American Cinema, can be pointed out. He is also one of the founders of the Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión de San Antonio de los Baños, Cuba, which he directs from 1986 to 1990.
