Larry Towell, de 49 años de edad, es el único fotoperiodista canadiense que pertenece a la prestigiosa Magnum Agency, un colectivo internacional, conocido por su visión humanista y universal. Entre los menonitas en México y en Ontario; los palestinos y salvadoreños bajo sitio; neoyorquinos de la mañana del once de septiembre o grupos de protesta encarando a la policita antimotines, Towell muestra comunidades humanas que están desposeídas, confrontadas con la violencia, con la pobreza, intentando sobrevivir mientras protegen su lugar en el mundo, como el hogar del fotógrafo, cuyos ocupantes son también el sujeto de un ensayo fotográfico. Lejos de ser una saga de las tragedias del mundo, el trabajo de Towell es más bien una colección de momentos íntimos vividos por personas que son a la vez fuertes y frágiles. Este documental desea explorar el trabajo de Larry Towell, en colaboración con el fotógrafo mismo, quien es también poeta, escritor, músico, diseñador de audio y artista del video.

Larry Towell, 49 years old, is the only Canadian photojournalist belonging to the prestigious Magnum agency, an international collective that’s known for its humanist and universal vision. Among the Mennonites in Mexico and Ontario; the Palestinians and Salvadorans under siege; New Yorkers in the morning of September 11th; demonstrators facing the anti-riot squad… Towell shows human communities that are dispossessed, confronted with violence, with poverty, and attempting simply to survive while protecting their place in the world, like the photographer’s home, whose occupants are also the subject of a photographic essay. Far from trying to be a saga of the world’s tragedies, Towell’s work is rather a collection of intimate moments lived by people who are both strong and fragile. This documentary is meant to be an exploration of Larry Towell’s work, in collaboration with the photographer himself, who is also a poet, a writer, a musician, a sound designer and a video artist.

MARY ELLEN DAVIS (Montreal, 1945)

Ha vivido en Francia y en Quebec. Tras graduarse en Producción de cine realizó un cortometraje sobre el músico de jazz Nelson Symonds (Montreal). Viajó varias veces a Guatemala, donde filmó tres documentales, The Devil’s Dream (1992), Tierra Madre (1996) y Haunted Land (2001), los cuales obtuvieron reconocimiento internacional. Ayudó a producir Alejandro (1994), largometraje dirigido por el salvadoreño Guillermo Escalón. Desde 1997 trabaja de tiempo parcial como consejera del programa de film y video First Nations de Montreal, dentro del festival Présence autochtone, junto con el director de Land InSights, André Dudemaine.

She has lived in France and in Québec. After graduating in Film Production (Fine Arts, Concordia Univ.), she made a short film about Montreal jazz musician, Nelson Symonds. She traveled several times to Guatemala, where she filmed three documentaries, The Devil’s Dream (1992), Tierra Madre (1996) and Haunted Land (2001), all won international recognition. She helped to produce Alejandro (1994), a feature-length film by Salvadorean director Guillermo Escalon. Since 1997, she works part-time as program advisor for Montreal’s First Nations Film & Video Program within Festival Présence autochtone, along with Land InSights director André Dudemaine.
