santaolallapost.jpgWe are proud to announce that the recipient of the 2008 the Guadalajara Award is the Argentine musician, film composer producer and two-time Academy Award-winner Gustavo Santaolalla.

Santaolalla was one of the early pioneers of Argentinean rock. With a passionate love for both Rock ‘n’ Roll and his native Latin influences.

In the late 1960s, Santaolalla started the famous band Arco Iris (Rainbow), mixing rock, jazz, and folk music. He moved to Los Angeles in 1978. Faithful to his two loves: two loves: Rock ‘n’ Roll and Latin culture, he helped pioneer the fusion of conventional rock and traditional Latin music sometimes called rock en español. Hs a produced some of the promising, new Latin alternative groups, such as the now famous Café Tacvba, the premier group of the new Mexican rock movement of the 1980s.

Through his label, Surco, Santaolalla has signed and produced acts as diverse as the rap-rock band Molotov, the crooner Javier García and the Colombian heartthrob Juanes, whose album Un Día Normal (A Normal Day), racked up five Latin Grammy Awards in 2003 and sold more records in the U.S. than any other Spanish-language album that year.

Santaolalla has also introduced the sound to new audiences with his scores for the films Amores Perros, 21 Grams, and The Motorcycle Diaries. He won several awards including two Oscars for the soundtracks of Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain in 2005 (which also won a Golden Globe) and Babel in 2006 (which also won the British BAFTA)

His prolific work also leds him to new paths such as the production of Miguel Kohan’s Cafe de los Maestros which will be screened during the Opening Ceremony of the 23rd Edition of the Guadalajara Film Festival.
