Argentina with honors

birristanticsolanas.jpgArgentina is the guest country in this Festival´s edition, and on March 11 a tribute to three central Argentineans: Lita Stantic, Fernando Birri, and Fernando Pino Solanas took place at University of Guadalajara’s Paraninfo Enrique Díaz de León.

The ceremony included the presence of Raúl Padilla, chairman of the Film Festival´s Board, Alberto Orozco, president of Centro de Arte, Arquitectura y Diseño (University of Guadalajara), Jorge Sánchez, director of the Festival, and Stantic, Birri, and Pino Solanas.

Jorge Sánchez congratulated these filmmakers, and recognized Birri’s pioneer work in the development of Latin American film schools, Pino Solanas’s filmography always in touch with his country’s reality, and Stantic’s relevance as a producer of quality films and the support for new talents.

Lita expressed gratitude for the tribute and mentioned that she has been a film lover since her childhood and a follower of Mexican cinema. “Being here representing the Argentinean cinema is for me, the best tribute.â€Â

Birri affirmed: “Being rhetoric is bad but being ungrateful is worse.†He expressed gratitude for the joy of receiving this recognition and dedicated this award to his teacher Emilio “Indio†Fernández, with whom he spent time in Roma and influenced Birri to reconsider his view of reality.

Fernando Pino Solanas talked about the crossing of cultures: “The relationship between Argentina and Mexico has been essential to break politic and esthetic patterns.†He concluded expressing gratitude, highlighting the work of his two partners, and remembering other famous Argentinean talents.
