Closing Ceremony

telemexclausura.jpgOn Friday 14 at the Auditorio Telmex after eight days of intense activities the closing ceremony of the XXIII edition of the Guadalajara International Film Festival took place.

Arcelia Ramírez and Ana Serradilla were the hosts for the night that initiated with the presentation of the local group Movus who played the Festival’s theme, followed by a video of the events that occurred during the XXIII edition.

The Spanish Gerardo Olivares received award for the best Ibero-American feature fiction film with 14 Kilometers. The Mayahuel award for best Mexican feature fiction film went to Desierto adentro, by Rodrigo Pla.

Fernando Eimbcke was extolled as best director for Lake Tahoe and the winner of the best opera prima was Conozca la cabeza de Juan Pérez provoked the audience’s support, who were also fascinated to listen to the films recommended films for the Golden Globe awards 2009: Desierto adentro, Los desafinados, Lake Tahoe, and El baño del Papa.

After the ceremony at a press conference the director Rodrigo Plá expressed his happiness and gratitude for the Mayahuel award for his work in Desierto adentro (best feature fiction film, being selected for the 2009 Golden Globe® Awards, Mezcal Award, Audience Award, the awards for the actors Dolores Heredia and Mario Zaragoza, and for the cinematography) which culminated eight years of work.

Dolores Heredia was honored for her work in Conozca la cabeza de Juan Perez, Desierto adentro, and Enemigos íntimos. She was excited and moved for this first recognition within Mexico for her work as an actress. She added that in her characters she never thinks of an award, despite that she was blissful of receiving the award.
Fernando Eimbcke with his film Lake Tahoe highlighted the emotion of receiving for a second occasion an award in Guadalajara, and in fact had already left the city believing he would not obtain anything, so it came as a surprise that Lake Tahoe would have such an impact.

Cristianne Buckhard spoke about her documentary Buscando Aleida, which had a very positive reception and was glad to know that documentary films were being supported in Guadalajara. She mentioned that soon her film will be screened commercially in the country since this story belongs to Mexico. Emilio Portes of Conozca la cabeza de Juan Pérez was also surprised of the welcoming of his film and winner of best opera prima and best actress, and mentioned that the sources of his inspiration were the 40’s and without doubt Tin Tan.

Lastly, the young filmmaker Karla Castañeda presented her work Jacinta and was joyful for the award for best animation short. She mentioned that new projects will be presented next year and was happy to receive her first prize in her own city: Guadalajara.

The Festival said farewell with the presentation of 14 Kilometers and is working towards its XXIV edition in 2009.
